Production - Letters from Home
The story of Letters was inspired by the children of Francisco I. Madero boarding school in Mexico City where we have toured since 2005, with the plays Pedro’s Magic Shoes, Lucha La Libre, Conversations with the Moon, and El Tigre y Los Encontrados. Each year stories are brought back from the youth in Mexican orphanages, a production is developed from the stories, and then toured the following year.
The play currently being developed by Jose Antonio Perez of The Moving Cultural with SDSU students, deals with a group of children from all around the world who come together to form a traveling circus. The children’s main objective is to share the letters from home that have changed and inspired their lives. In the cacophony of this extraordinary circus we find the similarities and connections that exist through various cultures and that celebrate the differences.
The School of Theatre, Television, and Film has been a strong supporter with design elements, publicity and financial input allowing for the continued growth of this valuable bi-national cultural exchange of theatre with The Moving Cultural Theatre International Theatre project, created by SDSU graduate student Jose Antonio Perez and Associate Professor Peter James Cirino.
The production will be built and travel May 2009 here locally in San Diego, The Imperial Valley and then internationally to Mexico City. In the seven years that Mr. Perez and Professor Cirino have engaged in this project, over 100 SDSU students have been involved with the productions directly or indirectly. The production reaches 10,000 – 15,000 children…and the numbers continue to grow.
CURRICULUM
The Moving Cultural Theatre is developing a curriculum for Francisco I. Madero, Galileo Galilei and other schools in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Chiapas and the United States, so that we may train teachers in theatre for youth and creative drama. We would be leaving a curricular model that will be the basis for the ongoing exchange that we have created and maintained these past seven years. Along with the curriculum the underlying goal is to bridge emotional, psychological, language and cultural gaps with these plays and a way of creating a bi-national cultural exchange of theatre between the Mexican and American students.
