STAGED READING SERIES (2006 Schedule TBA)AART
has selected a variety of thought provoking scripts by award winning
playwrights to share with the community. Each reading will be
followed by a discussion in which AART invites audience feedback as
it explores potential works for future seasons.
The first two plays are presented on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m.
at the Playhouse on Plaza in National City. The final two plays are
scheduled for Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at Actors Alliance of San
Diego in Normal Heights.
February 22:
PRIVATE JOKES, PUBLIC PLACES by Oren Safdie
A young Korean-American student presents her thesis for a public
swimming pool to an all-male jury of famous architects. This comic
play asks compelling questions about the state of the male-female
power struggle, fears of disrupting the status quo and ultimately
the importance of challenging tradition. Directed by Anne
Tran.

March 1: INNOCENT WHEN YOU DREAM
by Ken Narasaki
80 year old Nisei Dan has suffered a catastrophic stroke and
his adult children do their best to get to the hospital to pull the
plug. In his dreams Dan remembers a girl he met in the 1940’s whom
he could never understand. Directed by Alberto Isaac.

April 24: BOTOCAN by Thelma Virata De Castro
A play based on the playwright's mother’s memoirs about growing up during the Japanese Occupation of
the Philippines in World War II. In this fictional account, a young
woman must choose between serving her family or seeking vengeance
for a hidden crime. Directed by Jolene Hui.

May 1: EYES
OF THE HEART by Catherine Filloux
After witnessing the
atrocities collectively known as the “killing fields” in the chaos of Cambodia in the 70’s,
a 50 year old Cambodian woman suffers from psychosomatic blindness
as she adjusts to life in the United States. Directed by Kim
Miller.
